Maranoa Mayor comments after another Roma retail shop closes
AFTER hearing the news of Roma’s Rockmans closing its doors, Maranoa Regional Council mayor Tyson Golder said “it’s a sign that we need to change things”.
Apparel retailer Mosaic Brands, which owns Rockmans, Noni B, Katies, Millers and Rivers plans to shut up to 500 stores across the nation, following the financial hardship of bushfires, COVID-19 and ongoing disputes with landlords.
Locals have commented on the announcement on social media, saying they remember seeing the store in Westlands Plaza since 1985, and now are wondering where they can shop with only a handful of options available.
“I believe it’s an issue and it’s a sign that we need to change things,” mayor Golder said.
“I think one of the positive things about council’s budget and when people see the initiatives we roll out, they will see we want more people to come live out here, which helps retailers, and even if retailers leave, it’ll hopefully encourage new ones to come.
“It’ll be about – is there enough turnover in businesses to sustain being here and I believe this year’s budget is crucial to start that process.
“It won’t happen in one day, but there are a lot of opportunities to businesses to grow in the Maranoa.”
Cr Golder said the announcement highlighted how important it is to shop local and “make the Maranoa outstanding”.
“This really highlights how council needs to invest in competitive local businesses and do all the things we can do to ensure they stick around,” he said.
“I think if we get the settings right, business will come, and I’d love to see more local businesses.
“And I speak to a lot of businesses and I understand they’re struggling.
“I believe the support council is offering is in line with getting more population here and that means more customers, more employment and more services – we must change the dynamic.
“We really need to connect everything to get more jobs – the truth is, if there’s an outstanding performance store, it’ll stay.
“We need to make the Maranoa outstanding and more attractive and I believe, council need to work on things to make sure that happens.”
