Maranoa Mayor calls on Feds to double Roma flood commitment

MARANOA Mayor Rob Loughnan has called on the Federal Government to double its commitment to the Roma flood mitigation project.

The call comes just days after Julia Gillard announced $7m for the project as part of its insurance affordability initiatives.

Cr Loughnan said the announcement secured the funding to enable the first stage of the project to be completed.

"I would like to thank the Prime Minister, Senator Joe Ludwig, Minister Bill Shorten and Minister Simon Crean for leading the Cabinet into this proactive policy commitment and for their interest in Roma's flood mitigation," Cr Loughnan said.

Cr Loughnan said Council now needed another $7 million from the Federal Regional Development Australia Funding to help meet the full cost of the project.

"Stage two is still very much in the final design stage in what happens at the far southern end of the town," Cr Loughnan said.

"I'm still intending to go to Canberra in the next couple of weeks to argue the case the feds really need to match the generous state funding that's going towards this project."

The state government has also allocated $7.4 to the project but Council expects an announcement soon on the successful allocation of another $5.5m via the Royalties for the Region.

Council said the total Cost for the project is expected to be in the order of $30 million and has $27.4m on the table in approved grants and applications.
