Maranoa Council calls for input to Bassett Park masterplan

LOCALS heard about some of the limitations of Bassett Park as it approaches a half century of service to Roma.

Scott Alston of MAK Planning and Design was in town this week to seek public input on a master plan for the ageing facility and made some very early observations on its current state.
"It is not a suitable venue to hold a high profile NRL or A-League soccer game," Mr Alston said.

"Nor is it a suitable venue for a large scale musical event."

Mr Alston said the plan would look at how to consolidate some of Roma's sports like rugby, soccer and netball in one venue.

"The facility is currently under used," he said.

"But no one would be forced to move, they would only come if it had an equivalent or better facility than they currently have."

Other items Mr Alston canvassed were an indoor equestrian arena and a multi-purpose facility.

Mr Alston said land north of McPhie St might be suitable for the arena as the roof would impact the view of the racing if placed in the middle of the track.

The sports fields could reside in the middle of the track or to the south of Bassett Park while the he proposed a simple low maintenance multi-purpose facility to replace the existing hall behind the grandstand, which has maintenance issues.

Cr Peter Flynn said federal member Bruce Scott had backed the proposal to revamp Bassett Park and said they were looking for ideas on how it might look 10 to 20 years down the track.

You can still provide your feedback until July 21 on the master plan using the online Bassett Park Master Plan feedback form on Council's website.
