Maranoa Regional Council is eligible to apply for funding for projects under the government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program to deliver and improve cycle networks across the state.

The recommendation made to councillors was that they apply for funding for the Miscamble and Queen St intersection and allocate a 50 per cent co-contribution from the 2021/22 budget, if successful.

The estimated costs of the project is $600,000 with the maximum grant funding being $300,000.

According to the February 10 council agenda, the objective of the proposal is to improve the on-road cycle safety through the intersection and provide a shared path for active transport users, while maintaining current levels of service for vehicular traffic.

Two other projects have been previously knocked back as they were deemed ineligible for funding as the locations were not on the Principal Cycle Network.

This included, Miscamble St from Wright St to Carnarvon Highway with an estimated cost of $55,950 and on the southern side of Bungil St between the Adungadoo path and Roma Sports Precinct with an estimated cost of $986,740.

At the council meeting in Injune, deputy mayor Geoff McMullen moved that council apply for funding saying it will be very helpful along with the state government’s contribution.

Cr Joh Hancock seconded the motion with the remaining councillors all voting in favour.
