Maranoa celebrates Australia Day
Storm clouds and the occasional outburst of rain kept crowds down at most Australia Day celebrations across the Maranoa but did not dampen the spirit of those who did attend.
The Roma event was switched to the indoor arena at Bassett Park and the fireworks were cancelled on Tuesday as the forecasts showed a wet week was on the way.
Matters weren't helped by a sudden storm in the hour before the Roma event got underway.
Those that did attend saw Jenny Stinson announced as a popular choice for Roma's Citizen of the year for 2012.
Her award citation said Jenny was a member of many local social groups was a friendly face for the Pastoral Care Team at important religious gatherings and a productive and positive citizen of the Maranoa.
Easter in the Country took out Community Event of the Year, Maree Worland won the Cultural Award, Teal Ayres the Junior Sports, Ranald Ferrier the Member Contribution and Julie Cook won the Achievement Award.
Elsewhere, Mitchell celebrated its big day in the morning at the Shire Hall. Emotions ran high as Julie Kennedy was awarded Citizen of the Year posthumously.
Julie, who died suddenly at the Mitchell Heritage Ball in September 2011, was cited as "committed to her community, extremely giving of her time and a wonderfully vibrant person."
Gemma Watson was young citizen of the year, Back to Mitchell Reunion won Community Event, Mungallala Cultural Weekend won the Culture award, Desmond Burey the Sports Award, Jack Edgley Junior Sports, Chris Hughes Member Contribution and the Maranoa Village Auxiliary the Achievement Award.
Over at Wallumbilla it was a double celebration for Graham York who was their citizen of the year and also taking out the overall Maranoa Citizen of the Year.
Maranoa Mayor Robert Loughnan said Graham's dedication to the community was commendable.
"Graham has been heavily involved in the Wallumbilla and wider Maranoa communities for an extended period of time and I am proud to call him Regional Citizen of the Year," Cr Loughnan said.
Other winners were Ryan York (Young Citizen), Calico Cottage 20thbirthday (Community Event), Eileen Emery (Cultural) Kaylah Pearce (Junior Sports) Paul and Beryl Masson (Member Contribution), Greg Seawright (Achievement) and Thomas Patch (Junior Achievement).
Injune winners were Muffy Mansfield (Citizen of the Year), Reunions of the Past (Community Events), Graham Girle (Cultural), Darcy Jones (Sports), Zac Vidler (Junior Sports) Robert and Rita Taylor (Member Contribution) and Shirley Nayda (Achievement).
Surat winners were Glen Nielsen (Citizen of the Year), Surat Diggers Race Day (Community Event), Kathy Ellem (Cultural), Ben Itzstein (Sports), Benjamin Hancock (Junior Sports), Debra Richardson (Member Contribution) and Michelle Freshwater (Achievement).
