Maranoa Beef takes out top gong

THEY took a chance on their passion and now, 14 months later, the Beissels were named Maranoa's 2017 Business of the Year.

Wallumbilla couple Rebecca and Craig Beissel established their paddock to plate business Maranoa Beef to promote their message of "know your farmer, know your food”.

Their products are distributed across Queensland and past the New South Wales border and have become a staple for many families.

"We have a really strong connection to the land and our animals and we noticed a big disconnect between us, as farmers, and our consumers and that's part of why we began Maranoa Beef,” Mrs Beissel said.

"We wanted to give people a story about where their food comes from and champion the rural industry as a whole.

"We are hoping to let people in the cities know that there are good news stories from the bush.”

This year's Maranoa Business Awards drew an unprecedented amount of nominations, with some categories containing 50 nominees or more.

Maranoa Beef were up for three of the categories, and not only did they take out the Santos 2017 Business of the Year, but also Palmer's Coaches Small Business of the Year.

"It was a huge privilege to be named the business of the year,” Mrs Beissel said.

"Just looking around the room and seeing so many people in business who face the same challenges that we do, it was an honour.”

Mrs Beissel said they have big plans in store for the future of their venture.

"We are looking at consolidating our newly established partnership with Uncle Bob's Bakeries in Brisbane,” she said.

"They are using 100% Maranoa Beef in their savoury pastry range.

"We are also looking at partnering with new businesses and maybe even boutique beer and wine matching.”

The Beissels would like to give special thanks to all of their customers and their butcher Geoff Lawson and his team at Lawson's Butchery as well as Clinton Smith at Gleeson's Quality Meats and their processor Steve Long.

"We're very grateful to all the people who've helped us along the way.

We'd also like to congratulate all the nominees, finalists and winners of the Maranoa Business Awards. And a special thanks must go to all the sponsors and Commerce Roma,” Mrs Beissel said.
