Man's foot blown off in lead-up to July 4 fireworks

A MAN in his late teens has been severely injured after reportedly stepping on "something that exploded" in Central Park in New York.

19-year-old Connor Golden "was walking, he stepped on a rock, there was some sort of explosion and he injured his left foot," New York Police Sergeant Lee Jones told AFP.

People in the area heard the explosion blocks away, reports the NZ Herald.

"It sounded like a cannon," Sara Gordon told the Daily News. "I thought it was a Fourth of July thing."

The accident meant Mr Golden's left leg had to be amputated below the knee.

"He was severely injured. His left leg was severely damaged, all bone and muscle," said John Murphy, a man who stayed on the scene until emergency services arrived.

The NYPD's bomb squad and police are investigating the circumstances of the explosion.

Mayor Bill de Blasio sent tweeted a reminder for people to stay safe around fireworks.
