Man with 1900 drug bags avoids jail time
A ROMA man has escaped serving jail time despite being in possession of an enormous amount of drug-related items.
Corey Yates fronted Roma Magistrates Court on three drug-related charges.
The court heard a search warrant of Yates' residence was carried out on Monday, February 19, when police discovered pipes and clip-seal bags they allege were involved in drug use.
The police prosecutor said police located 1900 clip-seal bags, which had drug residue on them.
The prosecution also told the court six glass pipes were found in the house and a further 17 were located in the carpark in the driveway.
The third drug-related charge came from an incident in Miles in March when Yates was pulled over for a breath test and licence check.
The court was told police detained Yates so they could search his vehicle.
The police prosecutor said two drinking straws were found in the car, the straws cut diagonally at the top.
The court was told Yates admitted to police he had used the straws to "scoop” the drug ice, however the use of the straws had happened several months prior.
Yates was on a suspended sentence for a previous conviction in December 2016, for which he was sentenced to six months' prison, suspended for two years.
Magistrate Jim Blanch told Yates in court the amount of drug-related items he had was staggering.
"I have never heard of anyone being caught with that many bags,” he said.
Yates' lawyer told the court his client understood the suspended sentence would now be enacted, but asked for immediate parole.
Yates was sentence to six months' prison and granted immediate parole.
