Man struck in chest with hammer, then stabbed
A QUEENSLAND man was allegedly struck in the chest with a hammer before being stabbed.
Police have charged a man with grievous bodily harm following investigations into an alleged assault in Cairns on Monday night.
Police said that at about 8.15pm, the 24-year-old Manunda man was socialising with a group of friends near the intersection of Sheridan and Smith streets.
It is alleged that during this time a 20-year-old Cairns man was struck in the chest with a hammer and then stabbed in the chest with a knife.
The injured man ran from the scene and collapsed in Lake Street where he was found by a member of the public.
He was taken to Cairns Hospital with serious injuries.
Investigating police located the Manunda man a short time later at a bus stop in Sheridan Street where he was arrested.
The man has been charged with grievous bodily harm and will appear in the Cairns Magistrate Court today.
