Man dies in hospital after dirt bike crash

UPDATE: A man who was rushed to hospital yesterday afternoon with serious head injuries from a dirt bike accident at Traveston Crossing died hours later.

Senior Constable Bill Greer from Imbil Police, who attended the scene, confirmed the man, from Cooran and aged 31, died in Nambour General Hospital after he was transported by ambulance about 3pm yesterday afternoon.

The Yamaha trail bike was the only vehicle involved in the crash, he told The Gympie Times, and it was unsure how long the man had been lying on the road before a passer by found him and called emergency services, but initial investigations suggest the crash occurred about 2.30pm.

"When the ambulance attended the man was conscious, but wasn't very coherent," he said.

"The bike was not overly hot, so it is unclear how long the accident had occurred before he was found."

Police said it appeared the man had "failed to negotiate a corner" and clipped a white guide post, throwing the man from the bike as he traveled south-east on Meddleton Rd.

The rescue helicopter was not tasked to attend due to a possible 40 minute delay with the service.

Paramedics transported the man by ambulance to Nambour Hospital where he passed away about 6.30pm.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
