Man fined putting cheaper items through self-serve checkout

A MAN who fooled the self-checkout at Coles on five occasions has been fined $500 for stealing.

Jason Robert Tudehope pleaded guilty in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court to five counts of dealing inappropriately with shop goods.

The court heard Tudehope, 45, went to Coles in Stockland Shopping Centre in Hervey Bay five times between January 28 and February 2.

Each time he paid at the self-service checkout and pressed the button for an item much cheaper than what he was purchasing.

It was not specified what Tudehope was buying or what he was pretending it was.

Defence lawyer Alison Geerlings said Tudehope was under a lot of pressure and stress at the time as he was working in Hervey Bay while his family lived on the Gold Coast.

"It was just a matter of getting in and out of the shop quickly," she said.

"He just hit the first button that came up, out of laziness."

Ms Geerlings said Tudehope was unlikely to do something similar again.

Magistrate Graeme Tatnell said as a manager of a shop, Tudehope should know the implications shop-lifting had for businesses.

He fined him $500 for all offences.

No conviction was recorded.
