Man lashes out after bail bid rejected

A MAN has called a Roma magistrate “f***ing scum” after being refused bail at the Roma Magistrates Court earlier this week.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before the Roma Magistrates Court via audio-visual link, seeking a bail application before Magistrate Peter Hasted.

The man lashed out at Mr Hasted after he ruled the offender would pose an unacceptable risk of committing a further offence were he released on bail.

After the hearing, Magistrate Hasted formally laid a charge of contempt of court on to the record.

The man faces charges involving wilful damage and possession of suspected stolen property.

During the application, police prosecutor Sergeant Shannon Bryce objected to the release saying he was “an unacceptable risk of committing an offence if he were to be released”.

Solicitor John Hawes said the accused was willing to submit to court orders involving living at a residential address away from the aggrieved, as well as a non-contact order.

“With respect to minimising the risk of offending again, he [the accused] has proposed to live in a different town to the aggrieved, and will agree not to approach the aggrieved if the court imposed an order,” he said.

Mr Hasted ruled he still posed an unacceptable risk and denied the application.
