Man denies he stole $45,000 from woman he met online

A CENTRAL Queensland man denies he stole $45,000 from someone he met on a dating website.

Electrician Ian Wesley Ramsay faces a fraud charge after he allegedly hooked up with a woman on internet dating website Plenty of Fish.

It is alleged he built up a relationship with the woman until he was able to persuade her to give him her life savings of $45,000.

APN Newsdesk is unable to reveal any other information about the alleged fraud but on Tuesday Ramsay tried to convince Brisbane Supreme Court Justice Jean Dalton to release him on bail.

The Rockhampton father of two told the court, via videolink from prison, that he would plead not guilty. "The (fraud) case is not strong," Ramsay, who represented himself, said. "Not being there for my boys has been hard."

Justice Dalton refused his request for bail saying his "shocking" criminal history of 90 offences dating back to 1988 showed he had a "lawless attitude". "If you are worried about your kids you need to think about that when you're committing offences," Justice Dalton said. "Not when you're making bail applications before the supreme court."

Ramsay would have been paroled on December 21 after serving three months of a 10-month prison term for unrelated drink-driving, bail breach and obstruct police charges.

Those offences happened in Gladstone and Rockhampton between August, 2014 and May last year.

Because the fraud charge breached the parole conditions, Ramsay was not released.
