Man charged for assaulting a police dog

A 40-year-old man has been charged following an incident yesterday that involved alleged dangerous driving and the assault of a Police Dog.

The Thornlands man has been charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving with a disqualified license, fail to stop motor vehicle, attempted injuring of a police dog and animal cruelty.

He has also been charged with four counts of assault police (one relating to PD Ox) and two counts each of stealing and burglary.

He is scheduled to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Shortly after 10.30am yesterday, police located a vehicle of interest on Foxwell Street. After an officer instructed a male to exit the vehicle, he allegedly drove the car forward and collided with a police vehicle several times, causing minimal damage.

The station wagon was then allegedly driven off, and police pursued the vehicle through Coomera Waters where stingers were unsuccessfully deployed at two locations.

The vehicle travelled along Colman Road and then a dirt track before it allegedly collided with a second police vehicle causing damage to the front of the car.

The station wagon came to a stop after it went down an embankment and crashed and the man then fled the scene on-foot.

At around 11.15am on Colman Road, Police Dog Ox became separated from his handler.

Police, including several members of the Dog Squad and POLAIR, assisted with the search.

At around 5.30pm, the man was taken into police custody in the Coomera Waters area.

A short time later, PD Ox was reunited with his handler.

A woman, who was in the company of the man during a mall part of this incident, have been transported to hospital.
