Making quilts, helping lives in Injune
FOR many decades, Leanne 'the Quilting Queen' Ballschmeiter's passion has been quilting.
Now Leanne has taken her love to the road, with her family, through the community-minded workshop - Quilt in a Day.
On Saturday the travelling event recently taught 11 relative novices at the Injune Memorial Hall how to make entire single-bed quilt in one day of workshopping.
The program, which is run by Leanne, her husband Ralf and 14-year-old daughter Emily, focuses on the intrinsic value of finishing the quilt rather than meticulous craftsmanship.
Leanne said the impact Quilt in a Day has on places like Injune is remarkable.
"We have had people saying that they never thought they could do it in a day, and I love that," she said.
"This is a whole group of people who have never quilted before and can't believe they do it in a day.
"We weren't planning to come, but we were told to come to Injune and all these girls did it in a day."
Participant Rebecca Girle admitted she was hesitant she could finish one in a day, but believes in the program's benefits for people who need a bright spot. "My mum and dad live at Injune, and Mum sent me an email with the flyer and it was a nice thing to do with her," she said.
"I was very sceptical, so it's pretty amazing, and I really commend Leanne and Ralf because they're travelling around Queensland and they were saying this morning that they do this for the social relief during the drought."
Injune local Leisa Wood said she had been using any excuse to put off quilting by herself, but said the workshop has given her the drive to kick-start it.
"I've had the material at home for 10 years and this has spurred me along to keep going," she said.
The event hits Wallumbilla next week, with places still available. The cost of $195 gives you all the materials, a sewing machine and hands-on help.
