Magpies play down new recruit's injury

COLLINGWOOD coach Nathan Buckley has played down an injury setback for boom recruit Daniel Wells.

The former Kangaroo was a risky proposition when brought to the Magpies following a three-year period which saw a mixture of brilliant footy and time out with injury.

Persistent calf issues gave Wells a disrupted pre-season and the midfielder-forward didn't play in Collingwood's JLT Community Series opener against Essendon.

That was due to an incident in a VFL intraclub match on Wednesday night against EFL side Vermont - where Collingwood AFLW assistant coach Harmit Singh is the senior coach.

"Wellsy was scheduled for three (quarters), got a kick in the calf," Buckley said.

"We didn't take any risks, pulled him after two quarters. But he'll train this week and continue his step up in the workrate and load. We had four other listed players that played and got through really well."

Wells will have a fortnight to recover with Collingwood fixtured to face Fremantle in Mandurah on March 4 in their next pre-season clash.

Buckley expects captain Scott Pendlebury and fellow midfield star Adam Treloar to play in that match.

"The players that were rested for this game will play in the next two," Buckley said.

"If there's anyone else we need to manage, we will. But it's pretty much trying to get our best mix together, build the chemistry and continue to build momentum."
