Loughnan to run again for Maranoa mayor

MARANOA Regional Council mayor Robert Loughnan has put his hand up to once again lead the council in the 2016-2020 term.

In a statement, Cr Loughnan said he would run for mayor at the March 19 local government elections.

"I took some time to consult with family and friends over the Christmas break and I am confident I have made the best decision in the interests of my family, the council and the community," he said.

"I feel I have the experience, energy and most of all, the safe hands that will be required to lead this council over the next four years."

Cr Loughnan served 18 years as a councillor prior to council amalgamation, and was mayor of the former Bungil Shire Council for eight years before being elected as the first mayor of Maranoa Regional Council.

"Please rest assured my basic approach to council service has changed little in 22 years," he said.

"I still hold myself accountable for every ratepayers' dollar and I take that responsibility very seriously."

Cr Loughnan said it was up to other councillors as to whether they would re-nominate either as a councillor or for the mayoralty and welcomed new candidates given some vacancies would be open.

"I will leave it to individual councillors to each declare their own intentions at the appropriate time relevant to their personal circumstances," he said.

"I do know we will be losing a number of talented councillors however, so the need for some continuity and local government experience will rarely be very important."

Cr Loughnan said he would not be campaigning until the caretaker period began.

"I will not kick off my campaign until at least after the election has been called," he said.
