Local horses lead pack at Maranoa

LOCALLY-trained horses dominated the track at the Maranoa Diggers Races on Saturday.

The day started off well with local horses taking out the top three spots in the first race of the day, the NJ Contracting Class 4 Handicap.

Ben Waldron's Fifth Leg was first past the post, followed by Renae Benfer's First Option and Craig Smith's Meghani.

Smith's horses then seemed to be on a winning streak for the rest of the day, running in the top four in all four races he entered.

Smith's horse Degenda was the only local to place in the big race of the day, the Booringa Cup, coming in fourth after Toowoomba's Seventh Heart, Charleville's Team Thunderstone and Augathella's Lucky Duke.

But despite this, local horses had a great day in the other races.

Scott Rodgers' Botanical Belle came third in the Samios Trading Post Class B Handicap and his horse Boying took home fourth in the Customers ATM Class 3 Handicap.

Barry Richardson's Vintage Flute came second in the same race.

The Maranoa Diggers Races is a big event on the Mitchell calendar, with the winner of the Booringa Cup taking home $5200 worth of prize money.
