LONG-SERVING St George doctor Adam Coltzau is in the running to be named Australian GP of the Year after winning the state title.

Dr Coltzau, who divides his time between duties at the St George Hospital and work at a local medical centre, said he was honoured by the accolade.

"I was shocked yet grateful to be named Queensland finalist in the 2017 Royal Australian College of General Practitioners General Practitioner of the Year Award,” Mr Coltzau said.

"There are many great GPs throughout the state and I never really thought I was in that category.

"I would like to thank my family, colleagues and the great people of St George for the support and opportunities they have provided me with.”

Dr Coltzau first came to StGeorge in 1999 during his final year as a medical student and returned as a junior medical officer a few years later.

"I absolutely love the place. There is something very special about this town and its people, so in 2002 I returned and have enjoyed helping to look after them ever since,” he said.

After finishing advanced skills training in obstetrics and anesthetics, Dr Coltzau completed most of his general practice training at St George Hospital and with Goondir Health Services.

"The training for general practice involves lots of study but I was lucky to have some great teachers in StGeorge, with Dr Cameron Bardsley as my supervisor and mentor, as well as the other local GPs including doctors Desley Marshall and Pam Turnock,” he said.

The dedicated doctor is a familiar face to many people in the shire, where he provides a general practice outreach clinic. Dr Coltzau said there was no such thing as a typical day in his field of medicine.

"It's really cradle-to-grave medicine, working both in the hospital and in the GP clinic.

"You can start the day seeing a sick man with chest pain and then see an antenatal patient, followed by a newborn you delivered last week and end with a terminally ill patient with cancer who you are looking after at the end of their life.”

The winner of the national RACGP General Practitioner of the Year Award will be announced in Sydney in October.
