Lifelong Echidna supporter bleeds blue and white
RUGBY UNION: Playing his first game for the Echidnas back in 1991, Justin Garvie has been involved with the white and blue legion ever since.
Coaching on and off for the past 10 years, as well as being district president of junior rugby league, Garvie has done most things around the Rugby club.
"I've been lucky enough to play throughout the years and I think this is the first year I didn't play in the old boys' game,” Garvie said.
"It was good to be up on the grandstand for once and be able to have a few beverages and watch the boys run around.”
For Garvie, one of the best things about the old boys' day is being able to catch up with old teammates, some of whom he played with in the 1990s.
"The beauty of this club is a lot of the guys still hang around and get involved,” Garvie said.
"We treat it is a reunion - it's become a fairly big part of the calendar.”
Garvie is impressed with the quality of Echidnas players this season and is confident they'll be playing in the finals at the end of the season.
"This year's team definitely has the goods to make history for the Echidnas and win that elusive grand final - we never managed to get over the line,” Garvie said.
His son, Max, now plays for the U14s in junior rugby league and calls the shots at the Echidnas training when he goes along with his dad.
"Max always comes out to gets amongst the boys,” Garvie said.
In 2017, Garvie played for the Echidnas with his eldest son, Jonah, against Highfields.
"Its always a great thing to have an opportunity to play alongside your son,” Garvie said.
He is looking forward to solid seasons from both the junior rugby league and rugby union teams.
"Football out here will always be strong,” he said.
