LETTER: Different expectations for our MPs

BILLY Gordon knowingly drinks alcohol then drives unlicensed but gets off with no conviction and a slap on the wrist fine of $750.

It really is a joke when consideration is made for the substantial income he receives as an MP.

There is a greater anomaly when considering the unpaid volunteers who fill an increasingly important position in the legal processes in our community, the Justices of the Peace.

Included in the many conditions to become a Justice of the Peace is no driving under the influence convictions and no traffic offences for the prior three years.

Apparently an MP can drink-drive unlicensed and that is acceptable but a volunteer JP cannot go 1kmh over the speed limit.

Definitely different standards. Is it any wonder that MPs are held in such low regard when low community standards are applied to their actions when compared to others who voluntarily give their time?

It is not just the JPs who are increasingly being asked to voluntarily provide their services but so many others who voluntarily keep our society operating.
