The latest update on floods across the Surat Basin

HERE'S the latest on the flood situation across the region.

Condamine

WESTERN Downs Regional Mayor Ray Brown said he expects Condamine residents to be cut off tonight.

Water is expected to cut off the bridge early Wednesday when levels exceed 10 metres.

An ambulance and police officer will be stationed in Condamine as of tonight when river levels are expected to reach 10metres.

"It is predicted to reach 11 metres Thursday or Friday and then hit a peak of 12 metres early next week," Mayor Brown said.

Mayor Brown said the SES went door knocking today to advise residents of their options.

"At a 12 metre flood peak no homes will be inundated and residents will continue to have power and utilities, it's just that roads will be cut," Mayor Brown said.

"We are monitoring the Condamine River with flood levels continuing to rise between Loudoun Bridge and the Chinchilla Weir."

"Flood waters continue to recede in Dalby, Jandowae and Warra with clean up either completed or underway."

Miles

WESTERN Downs Regional Council has set up a safe shelter for the travelling public who are stuck in Miles.

Miles is the last town for travellers heading east with Charley's Creek in Chinchilla closed to all traffic for at least the next 24 hours.

WDRC Mayor Ray Brown said they had set up a safe shelter for many weary travellers who have been stuck in Miles since the road was closed yesterday.

"It is not a full evacuation centre," Cr Brown said.

"But it is a place where people can rest while waiting."

The centre is based at Miles' Memorial Hall and it contains 41 beds and has facilities for tea, coffee and showers.

Cr Brown said 100 trucks and 60 cars were stuck in town waiting to go east but they will have to wait till Thursday for Charley's Creek to go down.

"It's not looking good for tomorrow," he said.

Chinchilla

CHARLEY'S Creek is expected to peak at 6.5 metres or higher tonight and will cause some inundation to houses and business.

The Warrego Highway remains cut off between Chinchilla and Miles and the road may not reopen for the next couple of days.

The good news is flood levels should stay below the 7.2 peak of the 2011 floods.

Businesses in the township have been evacuated, including the Chinchilla News office.

Meanwhile flood water is still rising in the Condamine River from Loudoun Bridge to Chinchilla Weir.

The Condamine River flood level is predicted to peak at 12 metres.

For those stuck in Chinchilla, there will be a BBQ cook up tomorrow morning at the town's information centre in Chinchilla for all the stranded truckers and travellers.

Breakfast will go from 6am to 8am or until the food runs out.

Gleesons have donated sausages and the local Woolworth's has donated bacon and eggs.

Mayor Brown said residents wishing to volunteer their services for flood clean ups in Chinchilla and Condamine can call Council on 1300 COUNCIL to register.

Dalby

THE town of Dalby is recovering after the floods and current reports say no houses were inundated.

In Dalby, the main bridge into town on Drayton St is still open and was not closed off during the floods.

The Patrick Street Bridge is no longer under water and council cleaned the debris early this morning.

The road from Warwick to Dalby is open and travellers were able to get through today.

Maranoa (Roma, Surat and surrounds)

FURTHER west, the Maranoa Council said there was no major flood damage in their region and local creeks have stayed within minor water levels.

There have been areas of backed up drainage where Council has undertaken stormwater and drainage clearing works.

The Western Star has asked council how the upstream flood waters will affect the town of Surat and will provide information an update as soon as we receive an answer.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the Balonne River at Surat will rise to seven metres on Thursday with further rises predicted over the weekend.

Residents requiring further information are asked to call the Western Downs Disaster Coordination Centre on 1300 council (1300 268 624).

Maranoa district resources

Maranoa Mayor Robert Loughnan said Maranoa residents should call the council's emergency number if they require assistance rather than the SES 132 500 number.

"It came to our attention that Maranoa residents were having trouble registering their requests for assistance over the weekend," Cr Loughnan said.

"If we get residents to call Council during this period, we will be able to direct them through to our local SES.

The Maranoa Council's after hours emergency number is 1300 007 662.
