Landcare investment targets pests

Landcare has its sights set on curtailing a couple of prickly problems.

As part of an agreement to pass the backpacker tax, Landcare is set to receive a $100 million investment from the federal government that will help to prevent the impact of wild dogs and the spread of acacia prickly plants.

The substantial investment says Rural Services councillor Robyn Bryant is the first step to addressing the pest problem in and around Roma.

"This investment is really all about breaking down that first barrier to solving the greater issue.” Cr Bryant said.

"Its a complicated situation in regional Queensland, no one solution will outright solve it.

"With this investment and a determination to address the problem we have every right to be optimistic.”

One such strategy Maranoa regional council believes it can best use this funding for is building cluster fences around properties to stop attacks of wild dogs on local livestock.

Cluster fencing in regional Queensland has thus far been successful as some properties record their best livestock marking in years.

"There is one property in Queensland that had 10% of its lamb marking and that number has climbed to as high as 60% after cluster fencing was introduced,” Cr Bryant said.

Despite its initial success, Ms Bryant said cluster fencing is merely just one in a range of strategies that need to be implemented to stop wild dog attacks for good.

"Our top goal is the profitability of the region,” she said.

"Although cluster fencing is invaluable, we also need to individually log them long term but this gives that first step of control.”

Landcare is also addressing the expansion of the acacia 'prickly'plant across regional Queensland, now present on 23 million hectares of the Mitchell Grass Bioregion.

The pest is mainly an issue towards central Queensland and Roma as of yet doesn't have a significant issue with acacia pests but the council is none the less prepared to respond.
