Lagoon could put Mitchell on the map for tourists
"CAN YOU start tomorrow?” was the cry of one resident in response to a new lagoon that, according to organisers, could transform Mitchell into a premier tourist spot in southwest Queensland.
In front of residents and community leaders at the Mitchell Shire Hall, German Rocca, from Crystal Lagoons, showed how their artificial lakes and pools have transformed locations into tourism hot spots.
Mr Rocca's visit was organised by outback tourism consultant Paul Casey, in partnership with the Booringa Action Group.
Mr Casey, who is looking for community support for the project, said he was serious about putting Mitchell on the map.
"We don't want to bring false hope,” he said.
"This is now something that is very real and we are really serious about it. We have decided to back your town if you'll have us.
"As with the success we have seen of Crystal Lagoons all over the world, we believe there will be hundreds across Australia, and Mitchell is our number one choice.”
When asked by a community member how the project would be funded, Mr Casey said he couldn't disclose that information yet.
"I'm happy to stand here and say I could build and own it myself but that's probably not what's best for your town.
"The town can be involved as much as it wants to be.”
Addressing residents, Jeff Watson, of the Mitchell Booringa Action Group, said the town could experience an economic revitalisation if the proposal went ahead.
"We thought that with a project like this, the community would benefit from a great explosion in visitation and we would see those benefits in sales, jobs and business opportunities.”
