Kurds prepare final farewell for Queensland fallen hero
A GOLD Coast man killed fighting against Islamic State militants in Syria will be honoured on Sunday.
Reece Harding's body arrived at Melbourne Airport aboard a Malaysia Airlines flight on Friday.
The 23-year-old died on June 27 after he stepped on a landmine.
He was fighting with the Kurdish YPG, People's Defence Units in Syria.
Mr Harding's parents, Keith and Michele, will join Melbourne's Kurdish community for a traditional funeral service from 2pm.
Mr Harding's body will then return home to the Gold Coast for a family funeral scheduled for August 1.
Mr Harding's family has backed calls for Australians who fight Islamic State militants overseas to be given amnesty when they return to their home.
In a video released after he died, Mr Harding said he joined the People's Defence Units because Western countries such as Australia were not doing enough to stop IS slaughtering innocent Kurds.
