Kids dig national tree day

STUDENTS at Roma State College got in touch with nature on Friday morning, as they helped plant trees in the lead-up to National Tree Day on Sunday.

Black Toyota supplied the native saplings to the school and 10 students from the middle campus found the perfect spots for the new additions.

"Black Toyota has always been a supporter of National Tree Day,” branch manager Myles Cartwright said, as he gave the students a hand with the planting.

"And as a local dealership here in Roma, we like to get behind it and support our state schools.

"I think it's important kids of today learn how to plant trees - it teaches them about their role in looking after the environment.

"It's also good for future generations, and as a bonus provides a space for native animals and birds.”

The students used their second period class time to plant the trees with some help from ground staff.

National Tree Day is Australia's biggest environmental event and has been running for more than 25 years.

Planet Ark launched the event in 1996, and since then 3.5 million volunteers have planted more than 22 million trees.

The students were provided with gloves and long-sleeved shirts, to protect them from the elements while they worked.
