Kick-off at the Saint's new home ground

RUGBY LEAGUE: District junior rugby league clubs and the Maranoa girls netball teams kicked off their opening games of the season with their annual march past parade on Saturday.

The march past had close to 1000 players from the Mitchell Magpies, Roma Saints, Carnavon Cubs, Benderoo Bulls and Maranoa netball teams marching down McDowall St before hundreds of family members and supporters.

Roma Saints started the season at their new home ground, the Roma Echidnas Rugby Union Club oval.

Saints president Matthew Edwards said the new field was a good venue for players transitioning from school to club junior league.

"The whole club was represented really well and the games went off without a hitch,” Edwards said.

"It was great to see so many kids out on the field enjoying a game that is close to my heart.”

District junior rugby league president Justin Garvie has been working to re-create the U13 and U14 Stockman team, where selected players travel to Gatton for the Western Mustangs trials.

"It will give players from Roma, Western Downs and St George the chance to go to another level,” Garvie said.

This year there were so many players in a couple of clubs wanting to play for the U14s, that junior rugby league managed to form six teams, with a handful of players from the Carnarvon Cubs, Wandoan Wildcats and Roma Saints.

"It makes for a stronger competition and allows a lot more players on the field,” Garvie said.

"Junior rugby league is always going to be in Roma and its always going to be very strong.”
