Johnson set for a debut in Big Bash at long last

CRICKET: Freed from the constraints of the international game, Mitchell Johnson will make his Big Bash League debut this summer with the Perth Scorchers.

The 34-year-old, who retired last November but played three games in this year's Indian Premier League, was unveiled today as the side's star recruit.

"I was never going anywhere else and always wanted to stay here and be part of the community,” the left-arm quick told reporters.

"To be able to play for the Perth Scorchers, where I live and where I'm based, is perfect for me.”

Johnson, who has an eye on a coaching career, is also keen to mentor the side's younger bowlers Joel Paris and Jason Behrendorff.

"I'll hopefully be able to guide these young guys in the right direction,” he said.

"I want be a mentor and bowl alongside these guys.

"I want to be involved in the coaching side of things which has become a bit more of a focus for me.”
