John Maunder gets ready for Yuleba World's Greatest Shave

IN the weeks before Christmas, John Maunder was looking forward to studying Medicine at the University of Queensland when he got life changing news.

The 21-year-old from Wallumbilla said he had just had an enlarged lymph node removed and was told it was pathological in nature.

"I was eventually diagnosed with a rare incurable blood cancer called Nodular Lymphocyte Predominant Hodgkin's Lymphoma," Mr Maunder said.

The young man is nothing if not a fighter and has steeled himself for a long treatment process.

"It involves 8 treatments of fortnightly ABVD chemotherapy and a fortnightly dose of an antibody called Rituximab which targets the cancerous cells," he said.

"This will most likely be followed with involved-field radiotherapy which last a couple of years."

John said the treatment would get the cancer into remission but relapse was inevitable, so finding a cure for blood cancer is the only long-term option.

So John decided to get behind the Leukaemia Foundation which supports people with blood cancer and investing in research for a cure.

In March the Yuleba Bowls Club is hosting "The Worlds Greatest Shave" to raise funds for the Leukemia Foundation and John has got on board.

He said the support he has received is overwhelming.

"My team has raised over $27,000 in the last week - we are the number one team in Australia already," he said.

The World's Greatest Shave Bowls Day is on Sunday, March 17 at the Yuleba Golf and Bowls Club.

Morning tea is at 10am followed by the shave. There will be bowls after lunch and a barbecue in the evening.
