Jetgo cancels Roma to Sydney route before it takes off
JETGO'S plan to take Roma residents to Sydney in an hour has crashed before it got off the ground.
The Brisbane-based company has cancelled all immediate plans to bring a jet service from Sydney to Roma in the near future.
Managing director Paul Bredereck cited a poor response from corporate customers and the general public for the decision.
"Despite prior assurances from a number of corporate customers, that formed the basis of the proposed services, the demand has failed to materialise," he said.
"Jetgo even adjusted the proposed schedule to suit one of these corporate customers.
"Jetgo was also advised last week that some project work for early next year in the Roma district had been cancelled, which would affect other contractors that we were expecting to pick up," Mr Bredereck said.
Flights between Roma and the biggest city in Australia were due to start on December 1 after a number of postponements by Jetgo, which originally wanted to start last month.
Maranoa Mayor Robert Loughnan said the company's decision was "not surprising".
"I try and make things work - if someone comes with the optimism to make things happen, I would support it, but obviously that hasn't happened," he said.
"I'm not surprised, but it's always disappointing when something like this happens.
"We've been watching the signs for a while - when they postponed it initially, I thought it could only be they were not getting the numbers."
All flight refunds were made this week.
