RECYCLING should just be a matter of common sense, according to Roma resident Jen Kranenburg.

"It should be a normal thing we do in our lives, given the amount of information we have about how long it takes for things to break down,” Ms Kranenburg said.

When she moved to Roma from New Zealand, Ms Kranenburg was stunned to find no regular recycling service in town.

A lifelong recycler, she took matters into her own hands, taking out a year-long contract with JJ Richards for a recycling skip and pick up service.

Ms Kranenburg has made the bin available to the public, charging $2 per load to help cover the cost of the contract, with any extra money going towards a charity to help build toilet facilities in East Africa.

She said the response has already been very positive.

"I've been doing this for three weeks, and I've had three full bins,” she said.

Ms Kranenburg is particularly keen for people to make use of the service around Christmas time, when so much paper and packaging would otherwise go to landfill.

"We're in a society where everything comes in a package now,” she said.

She said reducing waste and reusing materials is an important part of preserving the environment.

"What we're doing to Earth right now is a direct result of our own actions, so why would you think twice about reusing something if it can be reused?” she said.

Ms Kranenburg has received positive feedback and support from council, as well as community clubs such as Apex.

She hopes to introduce more bins as demand increases.

The recycling bin is available in the Vital Health carpark on Thursdays from 4-6pm.
