Jamie Dwyer reveals he will retire after Rio Olympics

IT HAS not been officially announced, until now.

Jamie Dwyer today revealed to the Bulletin that following the Rio Olympics next year he will retire from hockey.

Speaking exclusively to the Bulletin, Dwyer said his sole focus was on Rio and then after that he would retire from the game.

"I haven't officially announced my retirement," Dwyer said.

"But I am now. After Rio I am 100 per cent retired.

"I have already retired from other hockey competitions this year, including club hockey and the Queensland Blades.

"That's because I am fully committed to playing for Australia and the Rio program.

"And after that, I am done.

"I am looking forward to working hard towards the Kookaburras achieving success in Rio.

"And then I am looking forward to spending time with my family and friends."

The most capped Australian hockey player of all time added that he cherishes every game in the green and gold and the desire to perform at the highest level was stronger than ever before.

"Definitely, that is the case," Dwyer said.

"The hunger, the fire in the belly burns brighter these days. That is because I know I don't have long left.

"I treasure every game for Australia, I really appreciate playing in the green and gold and I know what it means. It means a lot.

"If I do make the cut for the Rio Olympics I will do my job for my country and it will be the icing on the cake."
