Jail time for driver after third disqualified license

A MACKAY man has been jailed for six months for his third disqualified driving charge.

Shane Roy Griffiths, 36, has a "terrible" traffic history that also included six prior drink-driving charges and one dangerous operation of a vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance.

He was sentenced in the Mackay Magistrates Court yesterday for disqualified driving on September 25 last year on the Fitzroy Development Rd.

About 2.40pm police had intercepted the vehicle he was driving for another matter, the court was told.

When asked to produce his licence, Griffiths told officers he'd been disqualified by a court and checks confirmed this, the court was told.

Magistrate Damien Dwyer said Griffiths had entered an early and timely plea.

"You have a terrible driving history," Mr Dwyer said.

"You are not a man of good character in respect of traffic matters."

Mr Dwyer said Griffiths had previously been jailed for nine months for the dangerous operation of a vehicle charge.

There as no reasonable alternative to a sentence of imprisonment for this latest charge, the court was told.

Griffiths was jailed for six months to be released on parole after serving two months on March 20 this year. He was disqualified from driving for four years.

A woman broke down crying as Mr Dwyer handed down his sentence.
