'It will make people very angry' - Liberal MP on Rudd UN bid

KEVIN Rudd's attempt to become the UN secretary general could be torpedoed today.

Experts believe the former prime minister does not have enough cabinet support to justify current PM Malcolm Turnbull offering Australia's backing for Rudd's bid UN job bid.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is widely expected to raise Mr Rudd's request for  endorsement during a cabinet meeting this morning.

The Australian is reporting Liberal MPs are not happy about any official Coalition moves to support Mr Rudd's two-year push to be the next secretary general.

"It will make people very angry if Malcolm Turnbull can't find a place for former Liberal prime minister Tony Abbott on his frontbench but can back a former Labor prime minister for the top job at the UN," one MP reportedly told The Australian.

Mr Turnbull said earlier this week that the decision to back Mr Rudd would be left in the cabinet's hands.
