MICHAEL Gunning caught this massive 25kg giant trevally in a "crazy fight" off a Whitsunday reef at the weekend.

"I was twitching the lure over the shallow reef flats and hooked up to the fish," he said.

Michael (right) who uses lures rather than bait, caught this trevally on a westin swim lure.

"It was only a two-hour boat trip out to the spot," he said.

"It was just another day on the reef with plenty of fish caught and a good variety."

"I catch a lot of giant trevally but it's always nice to get one with a bit more size."

Michael said fishing was his sport.

"I like chasing fish for the fun more than eating them," he said. "I'm always trying to catch bigger and better fish and try and to break personal bests for each species. Most of the fish are released and we only keep a small amount to eat."

It was his dad and granddad that introduced him to fishing. "I've been fishing my whole life, since I could walk," he said. "I got into lure fishing around the age of 12 and since then I have been always looking for a new challenge."
