Prison investigating after inmate found with head injuries

A 27-YEAR-old Maryborough Correctional Centre inmate had to be flown to Brisbane in a serious condition after he suffered head injuries.

The prisoner was found at about 7pm on Wednesday night with head injuries and was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital before being flown out.

A Queensland Health spokeswoman told the Fraser Coast Chronicle the inmate was in a serious condition when he was flown by an air ambulance.

A Queensland Health Metro South spokeswoman confirmed the prisoner was currently at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

It is believed the prisoner is now in a stable condition.

A Queensland Corrective Services spokeswoman could not comment how the prisoner was injured or who found him.

The spokeswoman said an investigation has been opened to find out how he was injured.

The incident comes just one week after a coronial inquest was completed in Bundaberg relating to the death of a Maryborough Correctional Centre inmate in 2012. Last week's inquest examined why a murderer was kept in the same Maryborough prison unit as a 22-year-old Bundaberg man who would become the victim of his fatal attack.

The inquest found the convicted killer was intent on murdering someone - anyone - to stop being moved in prison. It found the brutal death of inmate Leonard Raymond Gordon was random.

Maryborough Correctional Centre remains about 100 prisoners over capacity and concerns of overcrowding were recently voiced to the ABC.
