I need to ask you all for a favour

EDITORIAL: It has been an honour and a joy to lead the Fraser Coast Chronicle over the past months, and to be part of this community again.

This is a time of challenge for the region - with economic problems and opportunities vying for ascendancy - and for the Chronicle, just as it is for the entire news industry.

I have bid a sad farewell to one of my oldest friends and mentors.

I have made new friends and, no doubt, new enemies.

That is the way of things as a newspaper editor.

The Chronicle is as vital and as central a part of the Fraser Coast as it has ever been.

The role of journalism is as deep and broad in a regional setting as it is on a national scale.

It strives to ensure that justice is done and seen to be done.

It educates, informs and, we hope, entertains.

It sparks and hosts community debate.

It supports the community in many, many ways.

And in return it relies on the community to support it.

Without that support, papers like the Chronicle will fade, and then who will watch the watchmen?

So, a favour as I leave: I love this paper as I love this region.

Take care of her for me, will you?
