House makes LNP her lifelong home

IN AN increasingly politically volatile and unpredictable world, Phillipa House is a breath of fresh air.

Ms House, a Roma resident, has been a member of the Liberal National Party for 60 years, a milestone Warrego MP, Ann Leahy, said demonstrated a rare kind of loyalty.

"It's really hard to imagine, when she was 17 when she first joined, it was a very different environment, and I think for someone to continue their involvement for as long as she has, it shows the utmost loyalty,” Ms Leahy said.

Ms House was honoured for her commitment to the party at Ms Leahy's Christmas function on Tuesday.

Ms Leahy presented Ms House with a certificate of thanks, referring to Ms House as an LNP hero.

Ms House said her long-standing involvement with the party came down to personal convictions.

"What they stand for is what I believe in,” she said.

"Especially in those days, when people were very straight down the line, it was very easy to work out whether you wanted to be in the Labor or National Party.”

The political environment is constantly evolving, and Ms House said she has seen significant changes in her time as a party member.

Most notable, she said, was the increased number of parties in the political sphere.

"I think it has changed quite a bit, but then I think all parties have changed,” Ms House said.

"We have quite a few different parties now, which was never the case in my day.”

She said an increase in the number of parties has led to a decrease in party loyalty; something she had her contemporaries considered essential.

"I think it's because there are too many parties nowadays. We had a whole group of young people in the same party, and we used to have meetings and enjoy ourselves, and we were a very cohesive group,” Ms House said.

"There wasn't the questioning of loyalty in those days.”

Ms House said increasingly busy lives and time poor citizens meant less engagement in political parties.

"Young people don't have a lot of time to be thinking about what they believe in.”
