Brisbane explodes with events this summer
IT'S about to heat up in the capital with an explosion of cultural events on the calendar. Here are just a few to whet the palate.
Cirque du Soleil KOOZA
Kicking off the party is the heart-stopping antics of Cirque du Soleil. KOOZA is the latest production from the internationally-renowned company combining gravity-defying acrobatic performances with the hilarious art of clowning (November 24 - Jan 8).
'Tis the season
A little sprinkling of Christmas fairy dust settles on Brisbane from November 25, starting with the Lighting of the Christmas Tree. Festivities continue until Christmas Eve with the perennial favourite the Christmas Parade and light projections on City Hall, fireworks and Christmas markets. The Lord Mayor's Christmas Carols return to the River Stage on December 10 in the Botanic Gardens and an enchanted garden will open for the first time at Roma Street Parklands for magical explorations.
Minchin's Matilda
Audiences are sure to have a toe-tapping good time at the award-winning Matilda the Musical taking to the stage at Brisbane's Lyric Theatre. Featuring original songs by Tim Minchin and based on the much-loved Roald Dahl story, Matilda the Musical is the tale of an extraordinary little girl with a vivid imagination and razor-sharp mind (November 25- Feb 12, 2017).
Wonderland
Wonderland is a passionate explosion of performance, a festival of surprise and delight. It's a place where artists present circus, comedy, music, physical theatre, magic and burlesque. It's 19 shows in 11 days. Check it out at the Powerhouse from November 24 - Dec 11.
The Nutcracker
Ben Stevenson's much-loved production of The Nutcracker has become a seasonal tradition in Brisbane. Gorgeous sets and costumes and stunning dance combine with Tchaikovsky's evocative music to make The Nutcracker the perfect festive ballet. See it at QPAC from December 9-23.
100% Brisbane
Brisbane is pulling back the layers of the city, going beneath the surface of high rises and the jacaranda trees to discover the very real heart of Brisbane's story. In an exhibition like no other, discover a real-time snapshot of the River City, told by Brisbane's people. Open now at the Museum of Brisbane.
Hadron Collider
Hadron Collider: Step inside the world's greatest experiment - the award winning Hadron Collider Exhibition from the Science Museum, London is coming to Queensland Museum in December 2016. This immersive exhibition blends theatre, video and sound art with real artefacts from CERN, recreating a visit to the famous particle physics laboratory. See it at the Queensland Museum from Dec 9- April 25.
Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival
The Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival (BAPFF) is a prestigious film festival in Australia showcasing the creative and cultural breadth of cinematic works from the vast Asia Pacific region. In its third year, BAPFF will offer more than 80 features and documentaries and will include a special Japanese retrospective to honour Setsuko Hara, the shining star of the golden era of post-war Japanese cinema. GOMA turns 10
This milestone for both GOMA and the city of Brisbane is being marked with a new public artwork by a Queensland Indigenous artist and major free exhibitions including 'Sugar Spin: you, me, art and everything', 'Lucent' showcasing art of Australia and the Pacific, and a second chapter of 'A World View: The Tim Fairfax Gift' with a captivating new light work by renowned artist Anthony McCall. The immense exhibition Sugar Spin will feature more than 200 contemporary artworks exploring light, space, architecture and the senses. See it from December to April at GOMA.
Coldplay
