Police investigate bomb at boarding house

POLICE are trying to work out who left a home-made bomb outside an Ipswich boarding house yesterday.

About 20 people from the Waghorn St house had to wait outside while police inspected the device - a 750ml glass rum bottle packed with nails and other substances.

Resident Luke Cox said he heard a noise about 1am, but didn't see the device until about noon.

"It was sitting underneath a window outside the house," Mr Cox said.

"If it went off properly it could have killed someone."

The bomb did not detonate, with the lid coming off and allowing the pressure to escape.

Police were on the scene but did not cordon off the street, due to the fact that the device was not seen as a risk of exploding.

Senior Sergeant Gerry Ould said the device was crude but still had the potential to cause damage.

"I can't say how dangerous it could have been, but I would warn others against attempting to make them. We know the types of injury they can cause," he said.
