Hospital CEO to face court on Tuesday

STOOD down South West Hospital and Health Service chief executive Graem Kelly will face Magistrates Court in Roma on Tuesday on charges Health Minister Lawrence Springborg describes as "not overly significant".

Mr Kelly has been charged with three counts of fraud and is also accused of five counts of making a false claim as an official.

The Western Star believes the charges relate to insignificant entitlements like cab charges and meal allowances.

Mr Springborg said the amount of money alleged to have been misappropriated was not overly significant but it was the potential breach of faith and trust that was the issue.

"In the interim, the director general has appointed a very qualified person to oversee the South West Hospital and Health Service," he said.

SWHHS board chair Dr Julia Leeds has stood aside temporarily from her position while the Department of Health investigates the allegations of misconduct.

Acting chair Lindsay Godfrey said the matter had an impact on the service.

"It has probably had more of an effect on the executive team than on the more far reaching areas," he said.

"To their credit, the executive team understands that our core responsibility is to the people and our patients and our staff across the whole area."

Mr Godfrey said it was business as usual for the South West Hospital and Health Service.

"We have appointed an acting chief executive, Ms Glynis Schultz, for a period of three months just to take over in the interim," he said.

"Glynis is very experienced having been the director of the service agreement management team in Brisbane.

"She's also come up through the office of rural and remote health so she is no stranger to issues around rural health."
