Horan promotes healthy lives
RUGBY UNION: Students at StJohn's Catholic School in Roma were visited by past Wallabies legend Tim Horan on Thursday morning.
Horan, who played in the winning World Cup side in 1991 and 1999 and is now a Santos ambassador, was visiting the Maranoa region as part of Santos' community engagement program.
"I go to different schools and the rugby club and teach kids about who the Wallabies are, as well as healthy eating and healthy lifestyles,” he said.
"I think it is important to come to regional towns because kids at school don't get to see current and retired sportsmen as much as in the city.
"It is more about making sure kids have a healthy lifestyle and that is playing any form of sport as well as what kind of food intake they have because healthy food promotes a healthy lifestyle.”
Horan said one of his best memories about Roma was when his team won the World Cup and they got to come through the schools and clubs and the environment Roma created.
"Country communities is where the lifeblood of sport is and it was great for everyone to have a chance to see the World Cup and get a photo,” he said.
On Thursday evening the Echidnas Rugby Union Club was treated to Horan and his expertise in the sport.
"I commentate on Fox Sports for rugby union, so I like to come out to these areas to understand and get feedback from the country rugby areas to see what is going on and why and whether they want to see more of the Wallabies or Reds players,” he said.
