Home run to take out gold

Softball: The Roma Masters team made a home run to a gold medal at the recent Pan Pacific Masters Softball Games earlier this month.

The team of 12 travelled to the Gold Coast to compete against 186 teams, 40 in their division, from November 2-11.

Playing two games a day, the Roma Masters were put into E grade, Division 15 and batted away slowly to take home the overall win for the competition.

This year marks the 20th anniversary since the Roma team formed.

Six of the players - ladies Tracy McCagh, Karen Sainty, Thelma Lingard, Ree Loom, Maree Maunder and Karen Beckey - are original members of the side.

"We originally started the team as friends who still wanted to play softball because there isn't a softball competition in Roma and we have just continued to compete at games each year,” McCagh said.

"It was a pretty hectic week where we played two games a day, some a double header and others with just a game in between.

"It was fair to say there were some pretty sore muscles by the end of the competition.”

During the first three days of the conception, the ladies took part in grading games to determine which division they would contest for the remaining games.

"We won five out of the six games and ended up on top,” McCagh said.

"We played Seajades, which we had beaten twice before and we were 14-0 in the second innings and they ended up coming back strong but we held on and won 16-12.

"It was a close game and because we don't play regular competitions like the other teams, we just start training a couple of months out and as the week goes on we just get better and better.

"We give the other teams a good run for their money and we are very unexpected winners,” she said.
