Higgins: 'Wet season has just begun'

STORM chaser Jeff Higgins says Queensland is only just entering its wet season now, with plenty more rain to come to Gladstone before it's over.

In a detailed explanation of why Gladstone has been hit by a series of downpours in the past couple of weeks, he pointed to a strong El Nino cycle, which had off-set rain.

"We had a record strength El Nino and that has great effects on your wet season, it's often very delayed -- sometimes you won't get a wet season at all.

"But at this stage, the way things are progressing now, the El Nino's weakening quickly at the moment, which is allowing the wet season to have a late start.

"Thank God, because a lot of people are relying on this rain.

"The general consensus that we're getting is that there is no such thing as too much rain."

El Nino is due to "break down" by June, but he said there is still plenty of uncertainty about whether a La Nina will take over.

"There's a lot of talk about it, but honestly mate -- it's barely even a 50-50."

He said when it does dip below the El Nino threshold, it's likely to head to a "normal phase" where we will still get more rain than we have seen recently.

"Historically, we tend to go into a La Nina after a long El Nino like this one.

"There's some indication we could at this stage head to an El Nina towards the end of the year.

"However, it's not something that you'd confidently go out and say."
