Heroes rescue woman and child from car fire
PASSING drivers helped save a woman and child from a fiery death yesterday when a four-wheel drive crashed off the Mary Valley Hwy about 11am.
Ignoring the danger, they helped the occupants escape from the overturned Mitsubishi Pajero just before it burst into intense flames.
The vehicle crashed near Cox Rd, just east of Jones Hill at Gympie.
A passing truck driver used his on-board extinguisher to fight the fire.
He quickly extinguished the engine compartment fire and a second passer-by helped the occupants get out of the car just before it reignited at the fuel tank.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Service station officer Matt Phillips said the help of the passers-by "went a long way towards helping the occupants survive".
Gympie Times photographer Patrick Woods happened upon the scene at that moment.
