Help ease festive worries
HEALTH authorities are warning about the potentially harmful effects the Christmas period may have on the mental health of vulnerable people in the community.
While the holidays were generally a happy and joyful occasion, for some it could be a worrying or depressing time, South West Hospital and Health Service mental health service director Christine McDougall said.
"The expense of gifts and food, the pressure of shopping and the expectations of the festive season could make Christmas an extremely stressful time,” Ms McDougall said.
"Unfortunately, some people find themselves alone at Christmas, leading to feelings of isolation and depression.”
She said even those who spent Christmas with family and friends could have negative feelings.
"This time of year can stir up many emotions in people, it's important for family and friends to be on the lookout for each other. This is actually a time of need for many in our community. We all need to support each other to help cope with the pressure of the holidays.”
Even a phone call to let someone know they had support could make a world of difference to someone in a vulnerable position.
