Having a ball for Dolly's legacy

OVER 120 people descended on Bassett Park on Saturday night to dance under the stars in support of Dolly's Dream.

Dolly's Dream is a charity group established by family and friends of Dolly Everett.

Dolly, who was once the face of Akubra, committed suicide at the beginning of the year.

The father of the 14-year-old Northern Territory girl said she took her own life after being bullied online.

One of the main aims of the charity group, Dolly's Dream, is to deliver information on the mitigation of bullying, including cyber bullying, to school age children.

In remembrance of Dolly, and to facilitate positive change for other young peoples' lives, Roma local and family friend of the Everetts, Tracey O'Brien, organised the Dancing Under the Stars Black Tie Ball to provide support, fundraising and promotion to the anti-bullying campaign.

"I've got kids of my own, and it's time we take a stand,” Mrs O'Brien said.

"We need to make sure people know bullying is not okay.”

Mrs O'Brien said there was one major message she was trying to get across as part of the event.

"Kindness is free,” she said.

"And we need to sprinkle it everywhere.”

As part of the evening's celebrations there was an auction of various items including a CT Iron & Fire fire pit that was auctioned off for $810, two holidays donated by ALH Group and Glentulloch Grazing Copmany that went for $800 each, and an Akubra, that was auctioned off for $580.

The auction raised over $3100 for Dolly's Dream.

Ex-Charleville resident Cathy Drummond kept revellers entertained to the wee hours while Roma's Apex team behind the bar kept them hydrated.
