Hail, heavy rain smashes parts of Toowoomba region

A SEVERE thunderstorm warning has been issued for the Toowoomba region and parts of the Darling Downs.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that "severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours".

At 1.35 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Oakey and Jimna.

They are forecast to affect the area northwest of Toowoomba by 2.05 pm and Highfields, Borumba Dam and the area west of Toowoomba by 2.35 pm.

There have been reports of heavy rain and hail in Pittsworth and southern areas of the Toowoomba region.
