Gympie being targeted by drug gangsters

GYMPIE will be one of Australia's important battlegrounds in the Federal Government's war on what the Prime Minister yesterday called "the most dangerous illegal drug we have ever seen."

Tony Abbott was talking about crystal methamphetamine, also known as "ice".

Regional Australia, including Gympie, was a significant target for those behind a growing epidemic and its associated mental health and violence issues.

"It is more addictive than heroin and is linked to extreme violence, very serious health problems and even physical disfigurement," Mr Abbott said.

"It is an awful, evil drug and the young people of Australia need to know it can leave you absolutely, horribly disfigured."

Speaking after his Bruce Hwy press conference at the Kybong Hall, Mr Abbott said Gympie too was a target for drug gangsters.

"The gangs that we believe are behind the ice trade are particularly targeting regional Australia," he said.
