Green groups welcome government's cattle station purchase

THE Queensland Government's purchase of a 560sq km Cape York cattle station to cut sediment flow to the Great Barrier Reef has been lauded by environment groups.

World Wide Fund for Nature's Nick Heath told the ABC the $7 million purchase was unprecedented. "Never before has a government bought land to protect the water quality of the Great Barrier Reef," he said.

Queensland Environment Minister Steven Miles said the station was responsible for 40% of the sediment running into the Normanby River system, and ultimately into the Great Barrier Reef.
